On Memorial Day,2004, Mrs. Alberta Martin, the last known widow of a Civil War Veteran
died ending an unlikely ascent from sharecropper's daughter to the belle of 2l't century
Confederate history buffs who paraded her across the south. She was 97. David Lang Camp
Commander Bob Hurst will present a program on the activities and ceremonies surrounding her
funeral in Alabama.
FLORIDA ANNUAL SCV CONVENTION
At the recent Florida Annual Convention which was held in June, Commander Bill Beckham was
appointed Chief of Staff of the Florida Division by newly elected Florida Division Commander
Doug Dawson. Compatriot Jim Darby was elected Florida Division 3d Brigade Commander.
Also, Commander Beckham received the prestigious John Milton Award and Compatriot Darby
received the Ulmer Award which is the highest award presented by the Florida Division. These
awards were well deserved as both Bill and Jim have dedicated much time and effort to the SCV
Cause and Finley's Brigade's Camp activities. Congratulations to each and thanks from each
member of Finley's Brigade. Also, Compatriots Rip O'Steen, Marshall Carroll and Hal Avery
received Certificates of Appreciation.

SCV ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION
The 2004 Annual Reunion will be headquartered at the Holiday Inn in Dalton, Georgia which is
located just of I-75. The business functions will be held at the North Georgia Trade and
Convention Center which is about 3 minutes from the Holiday Inn. You still have time to
register and attend but time is running out. Besides election of officers and other business
activities at the convention, there will be a B-B-Q with Bluegrass Music, a Confederate Period
Banquet and Ball, Tours of the Chickamauga Battle Field, a River Boat Cruise, and more. For

One proposed amendment to the SCV Constitution would raise the amount it cost to become a
life member in the SCV. The cost now to become a life member is $300.00 to age 59, $ 200.00
to age 69 and $100.00 over the age of 70. If you have considered becoming a life member, now
is a good time.

JUNE MEETING REPORT
Chaplin Paul Hurst provided an excellent presentation on the activities surrounding the
burial of the eight crew members of the Confederate Submarine Hunley. The burial took
place in Charleston, SC on April 17, 2004. Paul, Bill Beckham, Marshall Carroll and Jim
Darby made the tip to Charleston to attend the ceremonies.

address, etc. so that the rosters can be updated with your latest information. Also, in
order to lower the cost associated with mailing out hard copies of newsletter, etc., e-mail
will be the preferred method for sending out the newsletters and other information
regarding Camp activities. If you do not have e-mail, you'll still receive this information
by regular mail.
