Membership in the SCV is open to all male descendants (over age twelve) of any soldier who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. Membership can be obtained through either direct or collateral family lines. Kinship must be document proven genealogically. Proof of kinship to a Confederate soldier can take many forms. The easiest method is to contact the state archives from where the soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veterans service record. All southern states arcives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought from that state. A copy of these can be obtained for a nominal fee (usually under $20.00) . In addition, Confederate states also awarded pensions to soldiers and their widows up to at least 1910. These records can also be obtained and are often very useful.![]() |
