Marie H. P. " Pilkey" Crawford Scholarship Award
The Order of Confederate Rose Florida Society has been chosen to administrate a scholarship fund created by SCV member James Moore Crawford of DeFuniak Springs, Fl. in memory of his wife Marie H. P. " Pilkey" Crawford. Mr. Crawford is a member of camp # 1541, and has been a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for over 50 years. This endowment will allow us to provide tuition expenses for two girls to the Sam Davis Youth Camp located near Harriet, Arkansas. The girls will be selected by their winning essays on the topic of civility. Mrs. Crawford was the embodiment of civility, and her husband would like to see this gentle art carried forward into future generations of Southern Ladies.
Civility - as defined by Merriam- Webster is : a. courtesy, politeness b. a polite act or expression
This year's winners are Samantha Claire Brown (Phoebe Pember #01 and Confederate Legacy, supported by SCV camp # 1395, William Henry Harris) and Maria Danielle Cooper (Confederate Legacy, supported by SCV camp # 703, 8th Florida Quincy Young Guards) .
The Scholarship is open to young ladies from age 13 to 17. Essay competition commences on Jan.1 and runs until March 1st. Essay winners will be announced on April 1st to coincide with Confederate History Month. The topic of the essay will be Civility. Essays will be judged by the General Executive Board of the Order of Confederate Rose, Florida Society . Winners will be announced no later than 30 days after the close of the competition. Winners will be responsible for transportation to and from the camp.
All young ladies entering the competition must be sponsored by a Sons of Confederate Veterans camp in order to be eligible to attend the Sam Davis Youth camp.
